State figures show that Kansas remains a Republican state, but less so than in 2004, the last presidential election year.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Friday that new figures from the Kansas secretary of state's office indicate increases in registered Democrats and in unaffiliated voters statewide.

Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh said 80% of voting-age Kansans were registered to vote as of Thursday, a slight rise over 2004.

On Election Day 2004, 46.2% of registered voters in Kansas were Republican, 26.8% were Democrat, and 26.3% unaffiliated. On Thursday, the Republican percentage had dropped to 44.7%, Democrats had risen to 27.4%, and unaffiliated had grown to 27.1%.

The deadline to register is Oct. 20.
