Democratic Senate candidate Jim Slattery proposes expanded income tax credits to offset college tuition costs.

But the re-election campaign for Republican Sen. Pat Roberts is taking issue with how Slattery proposes to pay for those breaks.

Slattery is proposing that families receive a $5,000 tax credit against a student's tuition cost if they earn less than $200,000 a year.

Slattery spokeswoman Abbie Hodgson says the federal government can afford the $8.8 billion annual cost if it doesn't renew tax relief for the wealthy championed by President Bush.

But Roberts' campaign says allowing Bush tax policies to expire would hurt all families — more than Slattery's proposal would help.
