Democratic challenger Jim Slattery is attacking Republican Sen. Pat Roberts for getting the intelligence used to invade Iraq wrong while he was chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Slattery says voters should hold political leaders accountable when they make these kinds of mistakes.
Roberts counters that the intelligence failure was not only a U.S. failure but a world failure. And he says once the problems were realized it was his committee that made the information public.
That retort drew laughter in a raucous debate at the Kansas State Fair today between the two senate candidates.
