A McDonald's in New York City has become the first in the U.S. to undergo a makeover to look like thousands of sleek outlets in France and Britain.

The Manhattan eatery has outlets for plugging in laptops, vinyl chairs, subdued lighting and employees with all-black uniforms.

Patron Kimberly Burgess calls it "beautiful" and says "it's like a lounge."

McDonald's spokeswoman Danya Proud says the hip look has been responsible for company growth in Europe.

She says the company will "continue to evaluate" whether more might follow in the U.S.
