RE: Anonymous Oct. 18 @ 12:06 -- I certainly hope the criminal element stays away from me; I believe in self defense, I am a very good shot, and the firearm is loaded at all times. I am not against teachers and tats, I am advocating looking at the meaning behind the marking, and once again I state, a rose on the ankle is one thing, a tear drop on the face has a very different and significant meaning. If you have put the gang/criminal life behind you, back it up, go through the pain of removal, take the step of erasing the signs of ownership. Think before you type, remove head from sphincter than post.
Baby---Avoid anyone you want I'm sure they avoid you!!!
Are they serious?!?! A tattoo has nothing to do with the way someone teaches. I have tattoos and I am so sick and tired of people passing judgement. You cant tell whats in a book by its cover people, open your eyes. Whats next a teacher's sexual preference or thier religion? Get real, and let them teach.
Re: Oct. 16 @ 6:50 - - your post does not make sense or hold water. Gang related tattoos have no place in decent society; the whole reason for them is so they wearer can be identified as a gang member, their role in the gang and acts they have performed in the name of the gang. To avoid persons marked by their gang is not discrimination, it is good sense, like offending the sex offenders house at Halloween. Like an earlier person stated, a rose tat on the ankle is one thing, a tear drop on the face has a whole new and different meaning.
Test scores are actually rising. Other businesses require tattoos to be covered and have no excessive piercings. Teachers should be no different. In fact they need to be held to a higher standard. I'm a teacher.
Angela, are you saying that tattoos are not decient? Judgement should never be passed upon another. I think the least of our worries should be tattoos on teachers.April I am glad that you are content with your icecream sundae, but are you being fair saying it's okay to have your icecream, but Billy can't have a tattoo that you see might be "Gang Related"
I have tattoos. So, most would say I shouldn't have a problem with them. But, in some cases, I do. I agree that a rose on an ankle is not offensive, neither is the ice cream sundae on the back of my shoulder. But, some tattoos are offensive and not appropraite at school when you are in a position such as a teacher or an administrator. With all the gang problems, the bullying issues, and the emotionally distrubed kids that attend public school systems, I think a little good judgement should be insured in our school districts. Yes, consentrate on good test scores. But in order to teach you must be taken seriously and be able to be looked at as a person to be respected. I think tastless or crude tattoos can hinder that. If kids are expected to honor a dress code, then the teachers should also be setting a standard of class and respectablity. You don't see teacher wearing mini skirts and halter tops. Covering a tattoo should be a problem for a educated person with good intensions.
I agree they need to worry about our test scores. Half of the kids parents have tatoos. So they see this all the time. Most kids could care less if the teacher has one or not.
Two things. First, lets worry about our falling test scores. I doubt they have anything to do with tattoo's. Second, it is coming from all over the country, people are making these types of restrictions in all types of jobs. The police department just passed a policy on tattoos and the Sheriff's Office is folowing soon. Personally I dont care if the person is sleeved from head to toe with them. I can tell the difference between prison tattoo's and shop tattoo's. If the person conducts themselves in a professional manner and the tattoo's do not display "unsavory" or pornographic artwork, seriously, what is the big deal?
I have a cross on the back of my leg, for obvious reasons. Does that mean I have a negative stigma?
Are you kidding me?? My children had a wonderful teacher who had a tattoo and some crappy teachers who did not. A tattoo has absolutely nothing to do with a teacher's ability to teach. As long as people "look" a certain way that makes them more acceptable than others? Dennis Rader would have passed that type of test. I can't believe the people of Joplin would support this type of nonsense.
Why not educate them? We can not stick with the same ol' stigmas from the days of old. Society is changing and so are social beliefs. I would rather children be aware and understanding of personal choices, such as tattoos/piercings, than sheltered and force fed their opinions by a select few.
Hmm...isn't that sterotyping? Wow. The ACLU aughtta have a heyday with this one.
Maybe the negative stigma would go away if people quite the bans and looked to see what was inside and quite worrying about what is outside. A rose tattoo on the ankle is not the same as a tear drop on the face - take into account the meanings.
A nice step toward more decency in schools.
