City of Wichita officials will host a social media town hall tonight concerning the proposed budget.

Yesterday, City Manager Robert Layton presented a balanced, 2014-2015 annual operating budget for the City of Wichita. The City was initially facing a deficit of $3.8 million in the General Fund.

Budget proposals include a short term delay in the 2014 Wichita Police recruit class by three months, reallocation of fire resources at Stations 2, 22, and 38, and eliminating one division chief position which is currently vacant. These fire and police department changes will save nearly a million dollars.

The health insurance growth has been reduced to 8% which will save the City $397,000 in 2014 and $826,000 in 2015.

In addition, some areas of discussion for 2015, include reducing funding for the Sister Cities program and the possible closure of Orchard Library in West Wichita. It would save the City $9,000 and $42,000, respectively.

A Social Media Town Hall on will be held tonight from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Residents can ask questions on the City of Wichita Facebook page or through Twitter using the hashtag #ictbudget. Officials held a similar town hall through social media last month.

A public hearing for the budget is scheduled for Aug. 6. The City Council will adopt the 2014 operating budget on Aug. 13.
