The Topeka Police Department is warning of a possible internet scam, involving a fallen officers memorial fund.
Yesterday, the department set up two donation funds. Now, they're warning of a possible scam involving a PayPal account trying to solicit funds.
The Topeka Police Department released the following statement Tuesday morning:
Unfortunately we have been made aware of a possible internet scam in which someone has set up a PayPal account as a way of sending money to the Topeka Police Officers memorial funds.
The Topeka Police Department has set up only the two accounts at the Topeka Police Credit Union and the only way to donate is by a check sent in the mail or delivered in person.
If cash is the only option for donation they can accept that in person at the credit union between 9:00am and 2:00pm Monday through Friday.
Thank you again for assisting the department.
Two Topeka police officers, Corporal David Gogian and Officer Jeff Atherly, were gunned down Sunday night as they investigated a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of a Dillons store at 1400 SW Huntoon.
The suspect in that shooting died from wounds he suffered as he was being removed from a Topeka home early Monday morning. The Shawnee County Sheriff's Department said 22-year-old David Edward Tiscareno came out of the house holding a gun.
