The Powerball jackpot has ballooned to $360 million in a matter of weeks, a jump that's propelled it to be the third largest Powerball jackpot and the seventh largest jackpot in history.
Lottery officials say the "cross-selling" of Powerball and Mega Millions tickets, as well as a game redesign in 2012, boosted jackpots and increased the odds of winning some kind of prize.
Iowa Lottery spokeswoman Mary Neubauer says large jackpots are "the new normal," and she expects them to keep surpassing all-time jackpot records set years ago.
The last major win came when a New Jersey man won a $338.3 million jackpot on March 23. It is considered the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in history.
The latest drawing is scheduled Wednesday night. It has a $229.2 million cash value.
The Kansas Lottery also issued a news release concerning tonight's drawing and changes to the Hot Lotto. The full release is below:
The Kansas Lottery wishes all of its players good luck tonight! As lottery drawing nights go, it’s going to be a thriller! Players have a chance to win or share a $360 million Powerball
jackpot. The cash option on the jackpot is an estimated $229.2 million. To win the jackpot, players must match all numbers. In addition to the jackpot, there are eight other ways to win non-jackpot prizes, which could be as much as $2 million if the ticket includes Power Play.
If you win the $6.16 million Hot Lotto jackpot tonight, you’ll be thrilled with your big win and also thrilled to discover that:
· You’ll be paid 100% in cash.
· Initial withholding taxes will be paid on your jackpot.
· You will receive the entire advertised jackpot amount.
Changes in the Hot Lotto game are being rolled out for the first time with tonight’s drawing. In addition to the jackpot changes, the game will offer bigger prizes, including:
Match 5 + 1 – Did pay $10,000; now pays $30,000 ($90,000 with Sizzler)
Match 4 + 1 – Did pay $500; now pays $3,000 ($9,000 with Sizzler)
“These changes in Hot Lotto mean much larger payouts for second and third prizes,” said Kansas Lottery Director Dennis Taylor. “And for the lucky person who does hit the jackpot, having the taxes paid is going to be a real joy.”
The price for Hot Lotto stays the same at $1 per play, with the Sizzler option available for an additional $1. Sizzler multiplies all prizes won (except for the jackpot) by three.
Players have until 8:59 p.m. to purchase tickets for tonight’s drawings. The Kansas Lottery reminds players to play responsibly, and to always sign the back of their tickets!
