Today in money matters, we're getting down to the wire for buying those Christmas presents.
Americans all together will spend about $586 billion this year on holiday shopping. so how do you make sure your heart isn't bigger than your wallet? Dori Zinn with money talks news as some ways to avoid overspending on holiday gifts.
1. Make a list. Check it twice. Split up friends, family and extended relatives into different groups but make sure you are shopping with that list.
2. Make a budget. Don't just pick a total figure. Try prioritizing each person and setting a price limit for each person's gift.
3. Buy the same thing more than once. Sometimes you can get $100 worth of gift cards from one retailer for $80. So bundle gifts and save time and money.
4. Split the difference. If you're planning on a big gift for someone, talk to family or friends about going into together. The siblings can split the cost of a nice flat screen for mom and dad and the financial hit won't be that bad.
