Republicans in the Kansas Senate plan to discuss tax issues as Gov. Sam Brownback and top GOP legislative leaders continue private negotiations.

GOP state senators scheduled a Tuesday afternoon caucus.

Brownback is negotiating directly with Senate President Susan Wagle of Wichita and House Speaker Ray Merrick of Stilwell. Other lawmakers are waiting for a deal to emerge from their discussions.

Brownback and GOP legislative leaders want to follow up on massive personal income tax cuts enacted last year with another round of reductions in tax rates. But the state must stabilize its budget, and Brownback has proposed canceling a decrease in the sales tax scheduled for July.

Senators backed Brownback's plan on the sales tax, while the House wants to let the tax drop as planned.
