Safety officials have announced a massive recall for a popular kitchen appliance.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling about 1.3 million GE and Hotpoint dishwashers due to a fire hazard. The CPSC said an electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element could spark a fire.
The agency has received about 15 reports of heating element failures, including seven fires. Three of the fires caused extensive property damage.
This recall involves GE, GE Adora, GE Eterna, GE Profile and Hotpoint brand dishwashers. They were sold in black, white, bisque, stainless steel and CleanSteel™ exterior colors and finishes.
The dishwashers were sold in stores nationwide from March 2006 and August 2009. They sold for about $350 and $850.
Consumers should stop using the recalled dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply and inform users about the risk of fire. Customers should contact GE for a free in-home repair kit or rebate towards the purchase of a new dishwasher.
Contact GE toll-free at 1-866-918-8769 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.
