A buyer has stepped forward to purchase The Herald of New Britain and The Bristol Press, which were facing closure in less than two weeks under plans by the financially troubled Journal Register Publishing Co.

The two daily newspapers ran stories in Wednesday's editions saying that Michael E. Schroeder, owner of Central Connecticut Communications, has signed a letter of intent to buy the papers.

The Herald and Press reported that the sale should be complete within two weeks. The deal also includes the purchase of three weekly papers — the Wethersfield Post, the Newington Town Crier and the Rocky Hill Post.

Terms of the deal are not being disclosed.

Yardley, Pa.-based Journal Register said in November that the papers would close if a buyer wasn't found.
