Music sales continue to hit a flat note. The number of CDs sold dropped again in 2008, and even an increase in the number of digital downloads couldn't make up the gap.

So, overall, it adds up to an 8.5% drop in total album sales. Digital track sales, like those from Apple's iTunes Music Store, rose 27% from last year, breaking the 1 billion mark for the first time ever.

The Nielsen report is part of a troubling trend for the recording industry. It is having a hard time keeping profits up when people buy individual songs instead of albums.
