Apple is expanding the app store idea to Mac computers. Mac users who have the Snow Leopard operating system are being prompted to upgrade their software this week.
After the upgrade, an icon for the new Mac app store appears in the dock. It works like the app store for iPhone and iPad. More than a thousand programs for Macs are available for free or for purchase, and it links to existing iTunes account information.
The downside: you can't access the app store if you're using an older version of the Mac operating system.
