LIVINGSTON, Texas -- A Texas high school student has been suspended and sent to another school for what his mother calls an honest mistake.
KTRK reports that 17-year-old Chaz Seale was running late for school and accidentally packed a beer in his lunch instead of a soda.
When he realized the mistake at Livingston High School, the teen gave the unopened can to his teacher who then reported it to the principal. Seale was then suspended for three days and told to attend an alternative school for two months.
Christi Seale told KTRK that the punishment was excessive, considering that her son was trying to correct his mistake.
The school district issued the following statement to the station: "The principal of Livingston High School followed appropriate LISD administrative procedures and protocol. LISD encourages any parent who is in disagreement with an administrative decision to seek relief through the appellate process as provided through Livingston ISD policies. Livingston ISD policies may be accessed through the Livingston ISD Homepage."
Seale's mother is appealing the decision in an attempt to get the punishment reduced. A Facebook page was created by family and support to support the teen.
