A small Kansas town already known for being a little bit different is getting ready for a public potty party next month. The honor of pushing the handle for the first flush of Lucas' enormous new public bathroom is being auctioned off on eBay.

About 10,000 people come to Lucas every year to see the unique art work that covers the city, so when it was time to build a restroom for all those tourists city leaders knew no ordinary bathroom would do. It might take an artist's eye to grasp the full concept of the building right away but it doesn't take one to figure out where the inspiration came from.

“The tall, 18-foot front facade of this is the toilet,” Rosslyn Schultz, Director of the Grassroots Arts Center in Lucas said.

That's right, Lucas' new public bathroom is built to look like a giant commode. The building itself is the tank with a mosaic lid on the front made up of pieces donated by people in the community and beyond.

“There's a woman in Colorado that has sent her mother's set of china to be broken to be imbedded in here,” Schultz said.

The toilet seat is made up two benches where visitors can sit. And of course, what's a giant toilet, without a giant roll of toilet paper?

"This is a man hole culvert. It weighs 4,500 pounds so we think we have the heaviest roll of toilet paper,” Schultz said.

The latrine theme carries over to the inside of the building, but the actual bathrooms are completely covered with unique pieces or art created by local artist Mri-pilar.

Rosslyn Schultz says they wanted these bathrooms to not only be functional, but also serve as one more art attraction in Lucas. It seems to be working. Out of town visitors Judy and Donald Hollis stopped in and got a private tour of the facilities.

“I expected it to be some type of an art gallery, not a public bathroom,” Judy Hollis said.

The winner of the first flush auction will be announced June 2 at the grand opening. At last check, the eBay auction listing has 46 bids, with a highest bid of $223.50.
