Police say the woman who reported finding a baby on a Hawaii beach is actually the newborn's mother.
Keala Simeona was arrested Tuesday for filing a false police report. She was released after posting $250 bail.
The 21-year-old Honolulu woman had told police she found the baby crying in the sand in the night after hearing several people screaming. She took the baby girl to a hospital.
State Department of Human Services Director Patricia McManaman said Monday that the full-term, 8-pound baby was born soon before she was found.
A spokeswoman for the department says human services officials have just learned about the arrest and don't yet have any comment. The department had planned to file a petition in family court for custody if no family could be found.
