The number confirmed tornadoes in the United States is considerably down in 2012, several hundred under what is expected in a "normal" year.
According to the Storm Prediction Center at the National Weather Service, there have been 757 tornadoes through the end of September, which is about 400 less than normal.
At the same time last year, it was the opposite end of the spectrum: In 2011, there were about 400 more tornadoes that normal.
