UPDATE: Thursday, December 27, 2012

The storm that's dumping heavy snow on parts of the Northeast is now blamed for 15 deaths.

It's also continuing to delay holiday travelers trying to make their way back home by air or on the roads.

This morning, a Southwest Airlines jet bound for Tampa, Fla., veered off a taxiway and got stuck in mud at an airport on New York's Long Island. There were no injuries to the 129 passengers and five crew members. The area received heavy rain overnight.

Last night, a flight that landed in Pittsburgh got stuck in snow for about two hours on the tarmac. Passengers were eventually bused to the terminal.

There's anywhere from a few inches of snow to a foot in some locations in the Northeast. Forecasters say northern Pennsylvania and upstate New York, along with some inland parts of New England states, will get some of the heaviest snowfall. The storm is expected to move on to Canada tomorrow.

The death toll from a powerful winter storm that pushed through the nation's midsection into the Northeast has risen to 12.

The storm has dropped about a foot in some parts of the Northeast Thursday, a day after it dumped a record snowfall in Arkansas and ruined holiday travel plans around the region.

The National Weather Service says the Northeast's heaviest accumulations will be in northern Pennsylvania, upstate New York and inland sections of several New England states.

In coastal areas, the storm is mostly bringing high winds and heavy rain.

Thousands of travelers were trying to make it home Thursday after the fierce storm stranded them at airports or relatives' homes around the region.

The latest storm-related deaths include a man checking on a disabled vehicle near Allentown, Pa., who was struck and killed Wednesday night, and two people killed in separate crashes in Virginia.
