DETROIT, Mi The ice storm that blacked out homes from the Plains to the far Northeast of the U.S. is dealing a big "bah humbug" to thousands of families on Christmas Eve.

More than half a million homes and businesses still were without power Tuesday afternoon.

Utilities in several states are working around the clock to restore electricity, but Christmas lights in many homes remain off and the deep chill inside is forcing families to seek shelter with relatives or friends.

Others are hunkering down, not letting the outages diminish their holiday cheer.

John Potbury has been heating a room in his Mount Morris Township, Mich., home with generator-powered space heaters. He told his children, ages 8 and 5, that "Santa runs on reindeer power, not electricity, so he should be OK."
