Authorities say a man shot dead by police at a Salt Lake City light rail station had an explosive, just as he claimed he did.

Police detective Dennis McGowan says it's not clear what the explosive's potential was. Bomb squad robots later detonated the bag the man said contained an explosive device.

Salt Lake City police responded about 9 p.m. Thursday to the Gallivan Plaza TRAX station and found a man carrying what appeared to be a switch with wires leading to a backpack.

Police say their negotiations with the man broke down about two hours later. Officials say the man began walking toward officers, and when he didn't comply with orders to stop, he was shot.

The man died shortly after. He's been identified as 39-year-old Anthony Mayhew.
