The federal government is moving ahead with plans to sell a tiny island east of New York City, where experiments on dangerous animal diseases have been conducted since the 1950s.

Officials plan to close the lab there and move to a new facility in Kansas by 2018. That means Plum Island will soon be up for sale to the highest bidder.

But officials in the town of Southold on eastern Long Island want to have a say in the island's future. They are considering a plan to create a conservation zone on much of the 843-acre island.

The proposal has overjoyed environmentalists. No one really knows what the island may sell for, but one Hamptons real estate expert says precluding development there could mean a loss of tens of millions of dollars.

A vote is expected in June.
