MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A former corrections officer has been sentenced to life in prison for the fatal shootings of two rural Tennessee postal workers.

Chastain Montgomery had faced the death penalty if convicted in the deaths of Paula Robinson and Judy Spray during an October 2010 robbery of the post office in Henning, 45 miles northeast of Memphis.

Instead, he pleaded guilty in federal court in May to robbing the post office of just $63 and, along with his son, killing the postal workers.

The plea deal, which was unexpected, called for the 50-year-old Montgomery to be sentenced to life in prison. There is no parole in the federal system.

Montgomery's son, Chastain Montgomery Jr., was killed in a shootout with police in Mason after stealing a truck in February 2011.
