Authorities say a man who fled the scene of a hit-and-run accident gunned down a Long Island police officer.
Investigators were still hunting for a suspect in the killing of Nassau County Officer Arthur Lopez. Authorities say the same man killed another motorist during a carjacking after shooting the officer.
The shooting occurred Tuesday along a highway near the Belmont Racetrack on the edge of New York City after the 29-year-old Lopez and his partner stopped a motorist after the hit-and-run.
Authorities said that after shooting the officer, the motorist fled and killed another driver. He escaped in the second victim's car.
