Officials say legendary Gen. Vo Nguyen Giap, the military mastermind who drove the French and the Americans out of Vietnam, has died at age 102. He was the country's last famous communist revolutionary, and used ingenious guerrilla tactics to overcome enormous odds against superior forces.

Giap was a national hero whose legacy was second only to that of his mentor, former President Ho Chi Minh, who led the country to independence. A self-taught military strategist, Giap was best known for his victory over the French at Dien Bien Phu, which led not only to Vietnam's independence but also the collapse of colonialism across Indochina and beyond.

A government official and a source close to Giap said he died Friday in a hospital in Hanoi where he had been since 2009.
