Bob Dole has been released from Walter Reed Army Medical Center. The former Kansas Senator and Russell native checked himself into the hospital for what a spokesman called a routine procedure.

The 89 year-old spent 10 months in the hospital in 2010 for pneumonia. Since retiring from politics, Dole has served as Chairman of the National World War II Memorial.

A veteran himself, Dole was injured by German machine gunfire while serving in the army in World War II. He received two purple hearts and the Bronze Star.

In 2007, Dole was appointed to co-chair the investigation into problems with medical care at Walter Reed. He currently serves as special counsel to the Washington, D.C. law firm Alston & Bird.
