The man convicted in October of killing and beheading a 3-year-old girl known as "Precious Doe" for years wrote letters to his wife, urging her to reject a plea bargain in the case.
The Kansas City Star reported Monday that Harrell Johnson's jailhouse letters to Michelle Johnson told her they could beat the case, and included coming up with new story that blamed the girl's death on another person.
Michelle Johnson later pleaded guilty to her part in the 2001 death of her daughter, Erica Green, and agreed to testify against her husband. Following her decision, Harrell Johnson's letters became vindictive, saying he would tell people she abandoned Erica while doing drugs.
Harrell Johnson was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
