A somber caravan of 19 white hearses carrying the bodies of 19 wildland firefighters has arrived at its final destination in the Arizona mountain community of Prescott.
The procession began hours earlier Sunday at a coroner's office in Phoenix and drove 125 miles through the small town where the firefighters died last week in a wildfire.
Hundreds of firefighters, police and everyday people from across the state stood patiently in triple-digit temperatures in Phoenix, lined freeway overpasses with American flags and flooded the small streets of downtown Prescott to pay their respects.
The crew had been working to build a protection line between the lightning-caused blaze and Yarnell when winds shifted suddenly. The fire hooked around the firefighters and cut off their access to a safety zone.
