One year ago, hurricane Ike slammed ashore in Galveston, Texas. The storm was responsible for causing over $30 Billion in damage from Texas to Cuba to the Bahamas, becoming the third costliest Atlantic storm, only behind hurricanes Katrina and Andrew.

Parts of the Texas gulf coast are still bare, showing the scars of a surge-swept shoreline. Now, the lone star state is planning to spend over $100 Million dollars in state and federal funds to repair beaches and protect its shoreline by building dunes.

The city of Galveston is planning to restore almost 200 feet of beach in front of its famous seawall. Other parts of the Texas coast will see sand dunes installed. Dunes act as a natural barrier between the waves and homes near the coast.

This coastal protection plan is the largest in the state's history.
