Most businesses “dress down” on Fridays, but a retirement center is “dressing up” for a good cause.

Residents at the Sedgwick Plaza Retirement Center, 2455 N. Woodlawn, are wearing red to show their patriotic support.

“Here we are all one and there are no if and or buts about it,” said Francis Lovell, resident.

The group started “red shirt Friday” to support American troops several weeks ago. But an anonymous donor stepped up, purchasing special shirts for the residents to wear each week.

Most of the residents have been in the soldiers’ shoes.

“Many of us were veterans,” Lovell said. “I served two-and-a-half years in the Navy. My heart goes out to those people that are overseas that need support not only from their family, but from Americans.”

“Red shirt Fridays” also help bring together the retirement community.

“It means that we are showing our support not just for our country, but for our community,” said Misty Miller, Sedgwick Plaza Sales Director.
