Afghan investigators are trying to get access to as much as three hours of surveillance video from early Sunday of a U.S. base in Kandahar province.

An Afghan official says he's been shown a portion of the video. He says it shows the U.S. soldier suspected of carrying out a shooting rampage that left 16 Afghan villagers dead returning to the base, laying down his weapon and raising his arms in surrender.

The official says he was shown the footage as part of a U.S. effort to prove that only one soldier was involved in the shootings.

Some Afghan officials and residents of the villages that were attacked insist there was more than one shooter.

A member of the Afghan team investigating the killings says villagers told his group they saw more than 15 troops at the scene. However, it's unclear whether the soldiers were part of a search party that left the base to find the missing soldier.
