The USS Wichita is returning to the U.S. Navy fleet.
Rep. Mike Pompeo's office said today the Department of the Navy will announce tomorrow that a Littoral Combat Ship will be named the USS Wichita. Construction of the new ship will begin in the next couple of years.
The first USS Wichita was a Heavy Cruiser used during World War II, including the invasion of Okinawa. The most recent was a replenishment oiler, and was decommissioned 20 years ago in 1993.
“The USS Wichita has a long distinguished history", Rep. Pompeo said. I’m excited to know that this proud name will once again grace a ship dedicated to the security and protection of America.”
