A Ft. Riley soldier is dead after suffering a single gunshot wound early Saturday morning in Junction City.

WIBW reports that police were called to an apartment in the 300 block of West 8th Street just after 1:30 a.m. in reference to a person suffering from a gunshot wound.

Upon arrival, officers located a 22-year-old Ft. Riley soldier suffering from a single gunshot. He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy has been scheduled. The soldier’s identity is not being released at this time, pending notification of next of kin.

The investigation is ongoing, but police say the incident does not appear to be criminal in nature.
