ELLSWORTH COUNTY, Kan. - A Fort Riley soldier was killed Tuesday when his car hit the center pillars of a bridge along Interstate 70.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports the wreck occurred around 12:25 p.m., about nine miles northwest of Ellsworth. The crash killed 22-year-old Calvin Michalak. His rank was not immediately known.

It's not clear why his car hit the bridge, while heading west on the interstate. But troopers say Michalak was not wearing a seat belt.
