For-Profit Schools Jump To Enroll Military Spouses

Tuesday, May 29, 2012

For-profit colleges and schools are actively recruiting military spouses who can get their tuition paid by the Pentagon.

Now concerns are growing that a program that pays tuition for military wives and husbands has become part of a broader rush by for-profit colleges to get students with military-financed tuition benefits.

The program in question is called Military Spouse Career Advancement Accounts. It's been around for three years and is separate from the GI Bill.

Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin of Iowa is chairman of the House Education, Labor and Pensions committee, which has raised concerns about the spouse program. He says the Department of Defense is not doing enough to oversee it.
