U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is in Afghanistan to talk to the troops as the Pentagon prepares to send thousands more to the front lines of the fight against Taliban militants.
Gates landed in Kabul Wednesday afternoon, just as Afghan President Hamid Karzai prepared to meet U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington. The Pentagon chief says he wants to get an on-the-ground sense of the security situation in Afghanistan.
He also plans to review medical evacuation helicopters that, until recently, were unable to rescue injured people in Afghanistan as quickly as they do in Iraq.
