A northeast Kansas woman was killed in a crash Friday evening in Johnson County.

It happened just after 6:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of I-35 near 119th Street in Olathe.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says 89-year-old Elaine Smith, of Baldwin City, Kan., was southbound on the interstate when she failed to stop for another vehicle that was stopped in traffic and rear-ended it.

Smith was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead a short time later. Authorities say she was not wearing a seat belt.

An Olathe woman and two children who were in the other vehicle were not seriously hurt.

The crash is under investigation.
