A man suspected of burglarizing a Wichita home was beaten with an "ugly stick", police said today.
The incident happened around 1:30 a.m. at a home in the 3300 block of North Jeanette, in North Wichita.
A 52-year-old man living in the home was woken up and found a stranger standing in his bedroom doorway.
"It's the worst feeling you can ever think of. You realize your sanctuary has been violated," said Jeff Barbee, homeowner.
As Barbee tried chasing the suspect out of his home, the suspect hit Barbee's arm with a metal rod.
"At first, I didn't know there was anything wrong, but as the adrenaline and the energy and the excitement started to drop a little bit, I was like, 'Wow, this is starting to really hurt,'" he said.
As the suspect failed to escape through the front door, Barbee retrieved his "ugly stick." By then, the suspect escaped through the back door and Barbee called 911. But the suspect came back.
"The guy's already attacked you once. You think he fled and now he's back," said Barbee. "I screamed. I let it go again and I got my stick, so I'm swinging like a mad man."
Using his wooden walking stick, Barbee beat the burglar and kept him pinned until police arrived.
"I never anticipated ever using the ugly stick on nobody but that was ugly and he needed it," he said.
A 31-year-old man was arrested for aggravated burglary and aggravated battery. The homeowner retrieved his stolen property.
