Storm Damages Campus Landmark

Severe storms to blame to causing widespread damage across KAKEland Wednesday night.

Heavy rain and straight line winds topping 75 miles per hour toppled dozens of trees and downed power lines throughout Wichita.

One of the oldest trees in Wichita a casualty in the severe storms. Newman University lost a cedar tree that towered over the west edge of Sacred Heart Hall. The tree then fell on top of the building. Officials said the tree was about 60 to 80 ft. tall.

The University’s administration is currently brainstorming options for salvaging the wood for a sculpture or other art enhancement on campus.
