The Wichita Police Department is once again teaming up with Public Works and Utilities departments to place signs around major shopping areas in an effort to reduce thefts.
This holiday season, crews will be placing portable message signs near east and west shopping areas. The signs flash 24 hours a day, reminding shoppers to lock their cars and hide any valuables. This is the sixth year police have placed them.
“Hide your items, take your keys, lock your vehicle,” said Wichita Police Captain Gavin Seiler. “This is a busy time of year for thieves, and by giving shoppers a heads-up we hope to prevent auto thefts and vehicular break-ins in high-volume shopping areas.”
The flashing message boards are in place near Towne East Square on Rock Road, and near Towne West Square on Maple.
In December the signs will be moved to other shopping areas and remain there through the end of the year.
