Wichita School Calls Police About Child With 'Severe Bruising'

Thursday, January 24, 2013

Five children have been taken into police protective custody after an elementary school employee noticed injuries on a student Thursday.

Wednesday afternoon, a Colvin Elementary staff member was concerned after seeing "severe bruising" on the body of an 8-year-old student who was in the office. The child told staff that he had been disciplined by a relative with a belt.

A school employee called police, and officers went to the child's home in southeast Wichita. Police found safety and welfare issues at the home and took five children, including the 8-year-old, into protective custody.

The Exploited and Missing Children's Unit (EMCU) is now investigating, and believe a relative who does not live at the home may be responsible for the injuries. That person was not at the home when officers were on scene Thursday, and so far have not made an arrest.
