A suspect accused of trying to run over officers, had been stealing diesel fuel, officials said.
Police were first responding to a robbery in the 1300 block of South Bebe Street - near Kellogg and I-235 - a little after 12:30 a.m. Friday. One officer opened fire on that suspect as the driver tried to run over law enforcement officers.
"He jumped into his Dodge truck, crashed through a gate, driving straight at the two officers, who were very close to the gate. When he came crashing through the gate, one of the officers fired several shots at the vehicle," said Lt. Ken Landwehr of the Wichita Police Department.
No officers were hurt.
A few minutes later, officers responded to a call of a truck driving through a yard in the 1000 block of South Richmond. The truck knocked over a fence and hit a parked vehicle.
The suspect drove away, and the vehicle was spotted near 77th Street North and Rock Road. Sheriff's deputies were responding to a call of a gas theft at a farm house.
When deputies arrived, they pursued the vehicle for a short distance before the truck drove into a wet field. The truck was then stuck in the mud about a half mile into the field, where the truck remained Friday afternoon.
Officers surrounded the area and found the suspect, who had abandoned the truck. The man was taken into custody around 4 a.m.
Landwehr said the man had an outstanding KDOC warrant and was a viable suspect in several cases in the surrounding counties.
The man was driving a stolen truck from Harvey County.
