Parents Make First Appearance In Court After Infant's Legs Broken

Friday, March 15, 2013

A five-week-old baby is recovering at a Wichita hospital Friday night, and his parents are behind bars after doctors discover both of his legs are broken.

Family members tell KAKE News the baby boy just had a cast removed Thursday. He remains in protective custody while his parents remain in jail.

The 28-year-old mother and 26-year-old father of the infant made their first appearance in court Friday afternoon. We are not identifying them to protect the baby’s identity. The mother is charged with child endangerment; the father is charged with aggravated battery. Neither is to have contact with the baby.

A family member didn’t want to talk on camera, but he says the baby’s father claims the infant got his legs stuck in a changing table and that’s how it broke. He also says the father has anger issues and claims no one realized the baby was injured for several days after the incident. They took the baby to the hospital because he was irritable and his leg was swelling.

"In all of our potential abuse cases, doctors do a full skeletal scan and that's where we learned there were more fractures," said Jeff Weible, Exploited Missing and Children’s Unit.

Both suspects are being held on $25,000 bond.
