A top State Department official says the United States remains interested in planes made by Brazil's Embraer, despite the recent announcement that a $354 million contract with the company was being rescinded.

Deputy Secretary of State William Burns told reporters in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday that the U.S. "is in the midst of some internal processes" related to the case. Burns declined to provide any details.

Burns' visit to Brazil comes days after the U.S. Air Force said it planned to rescind a disputed contract for Embraer's light air support Super Tucano plane. There are also plans to open an investigation into the award, which has been challenged by Wichita-based Hawker Beechcraft Corp.
