The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says the general public should restrict consumption of largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass to one meal per week.
The KDHE’s advisory is even stricter for women who are pregnant, might become pregnant or are nursing; and for children under the age of 18. Those groups should restrict eating Kansas-caught bass to once a month.
The state health department blames the restrictions on the levels of mercury being found in the fish.
Mercury is a toxic chemical that poses health risks, particularly to fetuses and children. Developmental and neurological problems are some of the risks related to prolonged or repeated exposure.
Bass is a popular game fish in Kansas and can be found in most lakes.
