Crews were called to the River Park Apartments, 400 W. Central, around 1:30 p.m. They found heavy fire involvement on the upper balcony. The fire quickly spread to the building's attic.
Kevin Royce with the Wichita Fire Department says the fire destroyed 50 percent of one unit, displacing 2 adults. The damage was estimated at $30,000. No other apartments were damaged.
Royce says the fire started because of discarded smoking materials on the unit's balcony.
Other residents in the apartment building were able to stay in their homes. No one was hurt in the fire.
