Sedgwick County Sheriff Robert Hinshaw will retire and leave office before his term expires in January. In a special election Tuesday, Jeff Easter was elected to serve the remainder of Hinshaw’s term before beginning his own in January.
Hinshaw told KAKE News that his last official day in office will be Dec. 15. That's when Easter will take over as voted by the Republican precinct committee.
Easter defeated the incumbent Hinshaw in the August Republican primary before winning the Nov. 6 general election.
To retire early is the move Hinshaw said makes the most financial and logistical sense. Hinshaw is part of a retirement fund for Kansas police officers and firefighters, which offers incentives if he retires in December.
