Initial stages of construction are underway for the new terminal building at Mid-Continent Airport.
Work began Tuesday morning to demolish some of the existing infrastructure as well as excavation around the current terminal building, constructed in 1954.
Ground was broken for the $160 million terminal building in early September, which is tentatively scheduled to open in 2015. City officials say the project is being completely funded with airport passenger and aviation user fees, and will not use tax dollars.
In addition, a new parking garage and rental-car facility will also be built in a $40 million project. Both are funded by rental car fees, parking revenues and general obligation bonds. They are scheduled to be completed before the terminal building.
