A Chinese activist who was the subject of delicate diplomatic negotiations says Chinese citizens should stop tolerating lawlessness among their leaders.
Chen Guangcheng spoke Thursday in Manhattan at the Council on Foreign Relations, an international affairs think tank.
Chen says the era of cover-ups of illegal behavior by government officials is fast coming to an end in his homeland.
He says modern-day communications make it impossible for anyone to keep a secret.
But Chen says officials will still only change if citizens refuses to accept corruption.
Chen made a dramatic escape from a brutal house arrest in his rural village last month after seven years of imprisonment.
U.S. diplomats helped negotiate his exit from the country.
