Dozens of medical groups today announced a new ethics code. It will distance them from drug and device makers and limit the influence those companies have over medical guidelines and other issues that affect patient care.

The agreement covers 32 medical societies with 650,000 doctor, from neurologists and obstetricians to family physicians and pediatricians.

The new rules will require leaders of these groups and editors of their medical journals to have no ties to industry. The rules also say companies can no longer help pay for developing medical guidelines, such as who gets a test or treatment.
